We only have to look at Chris Columbous' adaptation of Harry Potter to realise that literature cannot be directly transplanted to film primarilly due to the fact that it very often prohibbits interpretation and artistic licence. Without Peter Jackson's selective nature, TLOTR may have lasted 5 hours due to Tolkiens dense and descriptive narrative. TLOTR is truly a monumental achievement in film-making. I have seen this film twice upon writing this and fully intend to go and see it again. Having read the books I was a little uneasy about the impending film release, however my fears were immediately dispelled as I sat back to enjoy one of the best cinema experiences of my life. Not only does the film manage to stunningly recreate middle-earth through a combination of wonderful set designs and magnificent CGI it also succeeds in conveying the motivations, fears and facets of the characters involved. Despite Tolkiens merticullous attention to detail, TLOTR is really all about the basic fundamental humanism that inhabits us all and although Jackson renders a middle-earth so sumptuous and real, he does not forget the true inner-laws that govern the book when transplanting it to the screen. The cast is also one of the finest that I have witnessed with many of the leading roles practically flawless. Aragon (Viggo Mortisenn) is for me undoubtedly the driving force behind the film as he wrestles with the power bestowed to him and his own inner self doubt. Sir Ian McKellan and Elijah Wood (Gandalf and Frodo) are also perfectly cast and although alot is made of Wood's deep, wounded blue eyes he brings so much more to the film. The real star for me however, is Sean Bean who plays Boromir. Being from England I have only really known Bean in such TV dranas as 'Sharpe', however to see him excell on a much larger stage is remarkable. This masterpiece is truly a great film and will probably become a timeless classic, however I am not sure how it got away with a PG-8 equivalent in the UK. It may not do as well as Harry Potter at the Box Office although I have little doubt as to which is the better film. I give TLOTR 9.5/10 |
