Meg Ryan stars as Kate McKay, a marketing researcher whose had very bad luck with love. Her exboyfriend Stuart (Liev Schreiber) lives above her in her New York apartment building and has found a time portal that transports him back to 1876 in which he encounters Leopold, the Duke Of Albany , played by the amazing Hugh Jackman who follows him back to the present day. One thing leads to another and well, you got it.....Kate and Leopold fall in love. A very interesting aspect of the film is that Leopold, the Duke of Albany in the film, is the man credited with the invention of the elevator and when he comes to the present day, time is changed and the elevators don't work. It was an original aspect to the film, and showed that changing time, can change how the world works. The chemistry between Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman is very strong and their romance is very sweet. The film has loads of comic relief, especially Kates brother Charlie (Breckin Meyer) and his scenes with the brash Lepold. Leopold's wooing of Kate is impressive, he's a man from the 19th century who is very courteous and knows exactly how to treat a woman. I really enjoyed how Leopold 19th century manner mixed with Kate's 21st century style, it was very interesting to watch the two combine. For all that's good about the film however, there are a few debits. "Kate and Leopold" tended to drag on abit, its 2 hours and 15 minutes in length, far too long for a romantic comedy and Meg Ryan just played her normal self; klutzy and hands off at first but cute and adorable half way through. She really needs a change in character. The film, I found, was a very important film for guys to see. Leopold's character is everything a man should aspire to be. His 19th century charm is something that every woman truly wants. Leopold was gracious, mannerly, caring and above all else a "perfect gentleman". Every man needs a little 1876 in him. "Kate and Leopold" is a cute, fuzzy and original romantic comedy. A great date movie with a fantasic performance by Hugh Jackman and a very original premise. It's a story of true love, how time can change the world's course and above all else, a film in which displays a man, in a very positive light. We all need a little 1876 in our lives. 7/10 [This message has been edited by idealdiscountdude (edited 01-03-2002).] |
