PAY IT FORWARD told the story of a boy who decided to make a difference in the world by beginning a "pay it forward" movement. He does a favor for three different people, but instead of asking them to pay it back, the catch is that they must pay it forward, or, in other words, do favors for three other people. One of the main characters in ANGEL EYES is a man who calls himself "Catch." Played by the intensely sad-eyed Jim Caviezel, Catch wanders around the streets of Chicago doing little favors for other people, like shutting off their car headlights, reminding them their keys are in their doors, or tackling a gunman who was this close to blowing a person's head away. But it's this last encounter that re-connects Catch with a woman from his past, someone he remembers but also someone who hasn't the faintest idea of who he is. ANGEL EYES promotes a supernatural romance in its ads, but it delivers a drama that mulls over how weird fate can be sometimes. The spark between the main characters is ignited through an incident of pure chance...or was it? That's the part of ANGEL EYES that really, really intrigued me. It has such a home court advantage by invoking the supernatural side of the story, but director Luis Mandoki (MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE) investigates this potentially intriguing subplot. In the end, ANGEL EYES is like a very spooky take on SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE. Jennifer Lopez delivers her finest job since OUT OF SIGHT, playing the gruff but flawed Sharon Pogue with the attitude which has proven she is more than a pretty face and an internationally well-known posterior. Her chemistry with Caviezel, an actor who has recently started to break out in films like THE THIN RED LINE and FREQUENCY, drives the film, and while the story has to be taken with a grain of salt, the uneasy relationship between Sharon and Catch is realistic to the last drop. Both main actors give fine performances, especially Caviezel as Catch, who always seems to be in a state where he's neither here nor there, leading a rocky relationship while he's mentally flashing back to the tragic accident that first brought him and Sharon together. Supporting players like Terrence Howard (THE BEST MAN) and Shirley Knight, as a shut-in Catch brings groceries to, don't receive as much attention as J. Lo and Jim do, but they try their hardest in more thin roles. Had Mandoki played the SIXTH SENSE angle a bit more, added a bit more ambiguity to Catch's background, my rating would have undoubtedly increased. But as it stands now, ANGEL EYES is an effective romance that simply chose not to take one little extra step. MY RATING: 9/10
