An interesting analysis...One I don't entirely agree with, but to each their own. You make a few good arguments. While I personally like the series the whole way through, it only starts to get REALLY interesting when director Hideaki Anno turns up the intellectual volume (the story is that the series was in production while Anno was suffering some heavy depression, and he charted his various thoughts through Shinji's experiences). The strange revelations encountered in episodes where Shinji goes on his mind-trips still hit me like a brick, as do Rei and Asuka's "big secret" in episodes 21-24. The characters, aside from the three Children, Misato, and the Commanders, do seem to have little to do but scream "No, that's impossible!", but that could just be to fit their "Greek Chorus" roles within the story. And yes, the fan-service is admittedly silly and useless...That doesn't mean I don't still appreciate it. The final two episodes are a continuing source of debate among Eva fans. Are those two episodes the true ending, or is it the movie, End of Evangelion? Some claim they're opposing ending, others that they're concurrent endings (I'm a believer in the latter, myself). And among fans, there is equal love for those two episodes as there is hate. Any way you look at it, I'm glad we have both the TV ending and the film ending, because it gives you that much more to think about. You are, however, missing a few points. 1. It is explained why 14-year-olds are the only ones who can pilot the Evas; they were concieved on the day of Second Impact. It's one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it plot points (they have a couple of those throughout the series), but they do cover it. What the exact relationship between Second Impact and the ability to pilot the Evangelion is, well, that's left up to the imagination. It's sci-fi, so you can forgive. 2. You comment on Misato screaming like an lunatic whenever she drinks her beer. It seems fake, doesn't it? And that's exactly what it is. Once you see the events from her past, you eventually realize that her loud-mouthed, beer-guzzling, partying ways are just a front for her true self...which only Kaji is familiar with. 3. Characters are seemingly dropped for stupid reasons...Call me crazy, buddy, but if giant ugly aliens and huge robots kept fighting and exploding around you, wouldn't you get sick of it after a while and haul ass out of there? I'm assuming you're referring to episode 24, where Shinji names all his classmates and says they've all gone away; I get the feeling it wasn't just his friends, but all of Tokyo-3 except for NERV personnel. After SPOILER Unit-00's explosive exit /SPOILER, can you blame them? 4. True, you won't understand parts of the series without seeing End of Evangelion. But at the same time you won't understand a lot of End of Evangelion without seeing the whole backstory that came before it. Cheesy episodes and all that we start with, the second half of the series is the real meat; End of Eva is like the ice cream sundae after the lima beans...if that analogy makes any sense to you. I do love Evangelion, but I don't "worship" it. I do, however, watch Cowboy Bebop religiously.
