The Ring is a dark, disturbing, creepy thrilling mystery with loads of eerie atmosphere and a good solid perfomance by Naomi Watts. She plays Rachel Keller who after attending the funeral of her recently deceased niece (under weird and inexplanable circumstances) tries to discover the mysterious nature of her death and this leads her to a tape...that when you see it you will die in 7 days. The tape is a nightmare filled with disturing imagery of a spooky woman, dead horses, an ominous lighthouse, maggots, a tree on fire etc. Once the tape ends you get a phone call telling you that you have 7 days to live. In horror/thriller films like this so much of the scares and disturbing images come from visions, quick flashes of decrepid women etc. and usually they don't add up to very much. feardotcom a similar film is filled with these scare tactics and they don't add up to anything. In this film those disturbing images do lead to something...also the problem with the other film is the logic, the film just didn't make sense. The Ring on the other hand stays within its own movie logic. Yes its a supernatural thriller and you have to suspend your disbelief but that is to buy into the film at the beginning...but it stays within its own rules and movie logic....and this is illustrated superbly with the shocking, creepy and disturbing as hell ending. Without this the film seems just good but it pulls the rug out from under you when you least expect it making it better. Overall The Ring is a disturbing, creepy film steeped in ominous and weird atmosphre that features a very solid performance by the gorgeous and talented Naomi Watts and a terrific ending.
