TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES a Jonathan Mostow JUDGMENT DAY Forget THE MATRIX RELOADED. This here is the ass-kicking, bubble-gum chewing, mind-blowing, ball-smashing action flick of the summer. And I mean it. I don't have time for a very detailed and cool review today (don't cry, there'll be other times), so I'll just slap something together quickly. You got the message already anyways. The Good: - Ahnuld. Well, like that's really a surprise. The man can be 56, I don't care: he was born to play the Terminator, and he plays it to the T once again. Perfect performance, every darn second of it. - Nick Stahl. Now this guy can act, and I think he manages to slip into Edward Furlong's shoes pretty easily. That being said, in 75% of T2, Furlong was little more to me than an annoying prick; here in T3, Stahl turns John Connor into an extremely likeable character, and you actually feel for him (which only happened in some rare scenes in T2). - Claire Danes. I was afraid the romantic angle might either ruin the whole flick, or feel like a copy of the Kyle Reese/Sarah Connor relationship of THE TERMINATOR. I had it all wrong. Claire Danes stars as Kate Brewster, and the best way to sum it all up is that she kicks some major ass...and she fits fine in the plot too. - A fantastic script -- and I mean it. Sure, the film isn't much extremely new, but the script has it all: emotion (mainly provided by Stahl and Danes), action (tons of it), tension, and some fantastic comic relief. There're some shots and lines that'll just make you laugh out loud, and that's something some summer "comedies" don't achieve. The script also re-uses some of the classic lines of the TERMINATOR series: the "I'll be back", the "Come with me if you want to live", even Robert Patrick's "That's a nice bike...". They're yours to spot, of course. And of course, it worked fine plot-wise. Nothing seemed out of place, and everything that was needed was there: a wink to Sarah Connor, an explanation for her death, a solid reason for the Terminators to be back, a solid explanation for why there even is a T3 after the way T2 ended, a solid everything. It just all clicked. There's even a message slapped in there! - The flick really FELT like a Terminator movie, which is fantastic. It didn't feel like an out-of-place sequel, or like any other sci-fi movie. This is Terminator. Period. - An ending worthy of the ending of T2. I just loved it. I don't want to spoil anything for you, so I won't even tell you if it's a twist ending or not (ha! fuckers ). But it's good. Real good. - The car chase/crane sequence at the beginning of the flick. Now, and I want to emphasize this: this sequence almost blows the "incredible" MATRIX RELOADED highway sequence out of the water. Joel Silver brags around that we'll see nothing like that highway sequence, ever? Well, he stands corrected -- and we only had to wait a few months. I say damn. - And last but not least...Kristanna Loken. I say damn again. Not only is this babe real hot (fantastic T&A at the beginning of the flick....now that's why I'm an ass guy), but she fits the part perfectly. She's actually as creepy as Robert Patrick is in T2, and that's saying something. Yummy ouch ouch... The Not-So Good: - Jonathan Mostow does a GREAT job, but unfortunately not such a memorable job as James Cameron does. I mean, there're some shots in Cameron's movies that you'll never forget. Mostow just held this flick together like a master craftsman, but not like a real artist...which is maybe for the best. - Marco Beltrami must be sentenced to death right now. Because folks...the Terminator theme, the oh-so famous theme, isn't in the flick at all, end credits excepted. And for me...that's blasphemy. All in all, folks...this summer's big movie, and the best blockbuster of the year since X2. See it, you won't regret it. 8.5/10
