Terminator: 10/10 Terminator 2: 9/10 First of all, I KNOW there is very little chance in Hell that T3 was going to be better than the first two movies for me. It's nearly impossible, since two of my most favorite action movies are Terminator and Terminator 2. All I was hoping for was a good time, some fun effects, and an all around time-waster of popcorn fun and action. Once I heard that James Cameron wasn't going to be directing - and then wasn't even going to be writing this flick - my expectations dropped much lower. ********SPOILERS UNTIL THE VERY BOTTOM ****** I thought that John Connor was not as intelligent or impressive as when we last left him back in 1994, defeating the T-1000. He is a loner as we meet him years later, left with a motorcycle and an unimportant voice-over. I figure that since you know there are spoilers, you dont' need to know the story. I'm going to skip that part. The problems. The Terminatrix: She's cute, but didn't blow me away. Regardless, I wanted a formidable foe that would (hopefully) top, or match, the fright factor that the T-1000 had in T2. I wasn't much impressed with the need to have her 'taste' the DNA of blood samples. She should just be able to make any kind of physical contact with an object and make a molecular lock on who that person is. Instead, they had to be groovy and make her taste the blood. Fine, but it's not that stylish. She is uncapable of completely transforming into a liquid object due to the hinderance of her robotic endoskeleton. It wasn't as scary to me to see her have to remain in humanoid form, and making lame guns with her hand. I was not at any point particularly afraid of her. She wasn't as frightening as the first two T-Killers. The Terminator: Well, what can I say? Obviously they felt a need to make him a joke in the eyes of the fans. I think they went too far with it IMO. I laughed at the dorky glasses. I think the amateurish psychology lesson gags were mediocre at best. DO NOT try to make 'talk to the hand' a fucking soundbite! That's really shitty. I don't understand how the Terminator would know not to do certain things that were ingrained into his programming from T2 (don't kill anyone, flip a visor down to get the keys, etc...) even though he claims to be a completely different Terminator. I understand that kate Brewster might have ordered him not to kill people, but don't try so hard to make the fans giggle with redundant odes to the previous movies if it doesn't help the continuity. James Cameron said it best in the T2 commentary when Terminator says "Wait here, I'll be back." He said, "Now isn't that much better than 'she'll be back'?" FUCK YES!! As for Arnold AS the Terminator... I wasn't impressed. He was too emotional, and wtf was up with his 'emotional internal battle' at the end when he's trying to fight against the reprogramming and keep John Connor away from him? Not only was that a stupid scene, but it was almost comedic as much as it was painful to watch this horribly contrived scene as John Connor runs away into... ... The Final Location: Who the FUCK did not know that a bomb shelter was where they were going? Well, other than Kate and John, of course. Kate's father wanted her to be able to survive the imminent nuclear destruction, so obviously he was telling them to get to a bomb shelter. The Terminator gave the location, and you're telling me that the intuitive John Connor and even SMARTER Kate Brewster didn't realise that's where they were going? PUH-LEASE. Even I knew from the beginning of the movie that Skynet was taking over all online computer activity, and that it became a virus that spread throughout the entire world network and could not be stopped at one simple location. I knew that Skynet became every computer that could get online at this point of the story. Why didn't the Terminator tell the thick-headed main characters of this obvious conclusion? How come they didn't figure it out themselves? The dialogue: All around embarassing. "There's enough C4 here to blow up TEN supercomputers!" At this point in the movie I decided to stop paying attention. Fucking dumb-ass line. That's not even the start of it. The dialogue is HORRIBLE. I don't want to elaborate on my distaste for the dialogue. If you don't agree with that example, then you probably won't agree with many other lines that I thought were unbearable in this movie. So be it. Special Effects/Overall Look: Well, the gorgeous look of the first two (especially the ice-blue trademark look in the second one) is difficult to surpass. As for the overall look of T3 - very stock. I was very disappointed to find that there was very little violence, and even when there WAS blood is was a very standard display of expected splattering (when it sprays onto a picture sitting on the nightstand - what movie HASN'T done that. The first two, obviously!!). There was hardly any imagination with the kills in this one. I wanted to see something creative! At least ONE neat kill, comparable to a sword through the face AND a milk carton pasted against a wall. No, I didn't get anything like that at all. I was expecting the liquid metal effects to be highly improved over T2. It should have looked great. Instead I caught myself wishing for the more 'realistic' appearance of the previous T-1000's metal effects. That shit kicked ass, yo! In this one, I kept thinking about how much better the effects were for a movie that came out TWELVE YEARS EARLIER, with then-unheard-of CGI. Thank you Mr. Cameron for pushing the envelope on CGI, taking a risk, and coming through with 4th of July fireworks! ******* END OF SPOILERS ******** I just say fuck this shit. I was very mad about how unexpectedly BAD this was. You will have to see it because it's a trilogy. I'm just pissed off that they made a joke of my favorite series. I am very pissed off at the dim-whitted characters and unintimidating Terminatrix. I wish they didn't make such a joke of the Terminator. And if it WAS to be a joke, make the jokes better! Although the ending is on a note that is deserving of a Terminator movie, I was too uninterested to care by the time that ending arrived. I sure wish James Cameron had enough heart in a third story to get behind the lens again for this one. I wish the third one had never been made. Now there will probably be a fourth, and maybe the fifth one will be released straight-to-video with second-rate actors! I see it happening! And that's too bad. 4.5/10
