REVIEW The first two Terminator movies are not only famous for their innovative technology and special effects but as well for their well developed storylines. They were uniquely original, and Terminator 2: Judgement Day produced a touching father-son relationship between the Terminator and John Connor. This third in the series however doesn't quite match up to the original two. It has plenty of special effects but the storyline is a bit on the thin side. The movie starts out with a reference or homage to Terminator 2 through Schwarzenegger's entrance, and at first this is amusing. But it is all too clear soon enough that Terminator 3 doesn't have enough creativity by itself to work. It relies on several running jokes and lines from the first two movies to create an atmosphere and the movie seems to play out like how a Terminator fan would make the movie, not how it should be. The storyline as well is pretty close to being the same as Terminator 2. When a series or franchise starts referencing itself, that's when you know it is getting stale. If you're not looking for something up to the quality and standards of the first two, then you will probably enjoy this film as fun summer fluff. The storyline isn't paper thin, but it doesn't match up to the first two in creativity and originality. But compared to other summer films, it isn't too shabby with the plot. Nick Stahl replaces Edward Furlong as John Connor along with Claire Danes, but the real stars of the movie are of course the two terminators. The Terminatrix (T-X), is played by Kristanna Loken, who is delightfully stony faced, exactly how a Terminator should be, and Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to form with his always excellent portrayal of a T-101. The movie doesn't really take itself that seriously, and humor is often injected into several scenes, including the vastly amusing "What is sexy" scene (you'll know it when you see it). The movie is loud. Very loud. Where Terminator 2 made use of more meaningful shots and action sequences are necessary to advance the storyline, Terminator 3 is essentially a two hour blow-things-up fest. Some of the shots in Terminator 2 are just brilliantly made (Sarah's dreams...watch the way that was shot...extremely powerful, and the last shot of the good Terminator), whereas in Terminator 3, the director isn't going for meaningful, but whatever makes the action sequences more exciting. The ending is interesting in that it has the trilogy go full circle, but at the same time, it's a bit worrisome as it opens the doors for yet another unneeded sequel. If you're looking for a fun romp at the theatres, this is a decent choice. If you're looking for a real Terminator movie, you'd be better off rewatching the first two again. FINAL GRADE: 6/10
