A rip-roaring sci-fi action thrill ride...that is enjoyable from start to finish! It's a fine continuation of The Terminator story, which hopefully sets up a fourth and final chapter. Along with its classic predecessors The Terminator(1984)-10/10 and Terminator 2: Judgment Day(1991)-9/10...this 3rd chapter vaults The Terminator series amongst the great action/sci-fi/fantasy trilogies of our time. I was really looking forward to this movie all year long...but I had my doubts especially with the absents of creator James Cameron and Linda Hamilton, who played Sarah Connor in the first two films. However, my fears were easily put to rest by this great piece of action sci-fi filmmaking...new director Jonathan Mostow should be credited with doing a masterful job and doing justice to this wonderful franchise. Everyone's favorite action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger returns in fine form as The Terminator, sent back through time...this time to protect Kathy Brewster, played by Claire Danes. This is probably Arnold's funniest performance as the Terminator...every time he is on screen or says a line I laughed and so did the audience. Even a slight head turn or a blank look can generate a laugh...but his trademark is his classic ever quotable one-liners and there are plenty of them here. "Talk to the hand", "We need a new vehicle", and his most famous "I'll be back" gets a new spin with "She'll be back". That she is the awesome ice-cold T-X played by a striking Kristanna Loken...she is a total badass in this film and has a great moment with a little "breast trick". It may be hard to top Robert Patrick's ultra-cool T-1000 from T2, but Loken pulls it off excellently. Nick Stahl plays John Connor, who we now see as a young man, who has completely distanced himself from society...no name, no address, no identity so this way future Terminators can't track him down. After the destruction of Cyberdyne in T2, he and Sarah prevented Judgment Day from happening...the date came and went and the world did not end...but as we soon find out you can't stop the inevitable. You can delay it, but you can't stop it. Interestingly enough this time Arnold has to protect Kathy Brewster, who will also be an important part of the future along with John Connor. Claire Danes gives a very nice performance as Kathy...she is sort of a mix between the two versions of Linda Hamilton from the first two films. On the one hand she is terrified for her life, confused and skeptical of all this future business, but you can tell she is a strong woman, who ultimately can take care of herself. She's also quite funny arguing with John and The Terminator. Enough about characters and plot...if you know the story you pretty much know what's going on. This film is all about the action and boy does it have some great stuff. Early on we are treated to one of the greatest car chases ever made! It involves a truck, a crane, fire engine and remote controlled police cars and an ambulance. It has to be seen to be believed...its intense, funny and just amazing and leaves a trail of undeniable destruction! We also have an excellent escape from a cemetary and an awesome battle at the new Skynet, which includes a powerful and metal-crunching brawl in a bathroom. One thing that I really appreciated about this movie is its running time...just under two hours, its not too long as compared to 3 certain summer blockbuster films earlier this year(think X, Keanu and Green)...the film is beautifully paced and the time seemed to fly by...and at the end it left you wanting more. Speaking of the end...it was perfect. It seemed so fitting for what the whole point of the movie was...and sets up a Terminator 4, which just has to get made! This is what summer blockbusters should be all about...Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines...is a fun, thrilling machine of a movie...featuring a solid cast with the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger doing what he does best. The humor, action and everything in between touched the right notes...delivering a wonderful and enjoyable summer movie experience. It clearly rises above the other summer blockbuster movies so far this year...don't miss it! |
