Truly a great summer flick." TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES Directed by Jonathan Mostow Starring Nick Stahl, Claire Danes, Arnold Schwartzenegger, and Kristanna Loken Rating: 9/10 I'm not the biggest fan of the Terminator films. I always thought they were a little overrated. So hearing about this film, I thought it would be a pretty lame, money-hungry sequel. Even after seeing the trailers I was not that excited to see T3. But I still wanted to see it in theatres. Well I just checked it out tonight and I was truly impressed. I think Terminator 3 is perhaps the best of the series. I am starting to warm up to T2 though. Nick Stahl makes a great John Connor. He's a much better actor than Edward Furlong. Claire Danes is also great. She seems so grown up and does a good job at playing such a different character from her previous roles in such films as Romeo and Juliet and Little Women. She always played a very frail, quiet character, and this is quite a change for her. She carries the role well. Arnold is as good as ever as The Terminator, maybe better than before. He really gives the character a new touch. I was also impressed with Mostow's great directing which seemed right in line with how James Cameron directed T1 and T2. The action scenes were amazing and definetely better than The Matrix Reloaded. Mostow pulls it off without the cartoony CGI. At the same time, the plot does not take a backseat to the action. The saga of the first two films is continued well, without being overly convoluted with philosophy like in Reloaded. Rather than seeming like a rehash with the same kind of climax as in Judgement Day, T3 provides us with new weapons against the evil Terminatrix and an unexpected ending that leaves you wanting more. The film begins and ends with a well written voice over by Stahl that sets up the film and ends it without seeming too "okay this is what happened," and the final sequence provides a fitting conclusion for the John Connor character. We see him accept responsibility, and the scene is handled well, in the same line as Borimir's redemption at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring. Well done Jonathan Mostow and all involved. You've got me and alot of others ready and waiting for T4. Those who haven't seen this movie need to see it right now. You may not agree that it is better than the previous Terminator films, but you will like it I'm sure. So how does it compare? The Terminator- 7/10 Terminator 2: Judgement Day- 8/10 (maybe 9) Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines- 9/10 |
