Team America: World Police Dir: Trey Parker Cast: (Voices) Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Kristen Miller I can only imagine how it was pitched. This is, essentially, a politically concious, riotously offensive comedy version of Thunderbirds. The story is simple Team America recruit Broadway actor Gary to infiltrate a group of terrorists they believe have weapons of mass destruction, meanwhile Korean dictator Kim Jong Il plans to use WMD to take over the world. Into this mix comes the Film Actors Guild (yep, that's the level of humour here) led by Alec Baldwin (one of the few voices impersonated rather well) who help Kim Jong Il host his 'peace conference'. Like The South Park movie Team America is a musical and most of the songs hit their mark. Notables include the hysterical "Pearl Harbour sucked and I miss you" and Kim Jong Il's "I'm So Ronery" The satire is blunted by a scattershot approach. South Park aimed for its target (Censorship) and skewered it perfectly. Team America doesn't know what it is aiming at; the left? the right? do gooder actors? terrorists? everyone gets pot shots taken at them and the film is weaker for that. That said the movie has some fantastic jokes; notably an hysterical running gag with Matt Damon and a great sequence in which Kim Jong Il feeds weapons inspector Hans Blix to his sharks. Kim Jong Il is easily the most memeorable character in the film, he's like Cartman as a Korean dictator and the joke is even funnier when you know that Kim is in reality a huge movie buff. Team America, though, are just boring ciphers, when stacked up against Kim and the various celebrity caricatures only Spotswoode (the leader who sits in Mt Rushmore directing missions) is truly memorable, simply by dint of the line "Have you ever seen a man eat his own head Gary?" For every joke that makes you convulse with laughter (We need a montage) there is one that falls flat (Gary vomiting for minutes on end) but really if you liked South Park you're not easily offended and Team America holds plenty of fun and is well worth your time 3/5
