A bunch of awesome characters who live in Mount Rushmore and travel around the world to fight crime. The film tracks the fight against a terrorist planning to blow up the world, love, and lots of other human emotions. Did I mention the people are puppets? And two of them have a steamy sex scene? Review: YES! Finally! Team America: World Police is a film that's been dangled in front of my and just about everyone else who has been anticipating it's faces for the last few months. Finally, after lots of hype and months of debate over whether it was going to be rated NC-17, Team America was here and it was just what I wanted in many ways and then some. Read on! Team America: World Police is the brainchild of Matt Stone and Trey Parker the men behind the South Park series as well as the show's brilliant movie South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. Obviously with how good Bigger, Longer, and Uncut was I was expecting a lot of Team America and it delievered on many levels. The first thing that jumped out at me is the amazing fact that Matt Stone and Trey Parker don't care about anyone, they shit on everyone, and they want to make you laugh. The offensiveness that worked with Bigger, Longer, and Uncut works to perfection here. For example, Gary the actor that Team America needs to go undercover to get the terrorist plans on where to use the WMD is in a New York City show called "LEASE", and obvious stab at "RENT". When we cut into the theater, Gary along with all his other castmates are singing us a song and what they say is: "Everybody has AIDS!" Once I heard that I exploded into non-stop laughter, the song went on for a good minute or more and only got better. In South Park style the film has even more songs. The films them song chants "America, FUCK YEAH!" and spouts offensive content by the second. There's also the song "Pearl Harbor Sucked" and the absolutely awesome "I'm So Wonrey." Besides the songs, this film becomes even more ballsy. Ton's of F-Bombs, puppets having sex, some serious puppet gore and more. What more can there be? How about every celebrity in the world being shit on? What celebrites are there? Tim Robbins, Samuel L. Jackon, Alec Baldwin, Helen Hunt, and Danny Glover...just to name a few! The potshots that are taken at the actors are hillarious, every time they come on screen they are made fun of. Did I mention Matt Damon? Just wait till' you see what they did with him! Let's not forget their spin on Michael Moore! Amazing! The great thing is that the film isn't overly political at all. People may think that the film is all stabs at Bush, or stabs at Kerry but it's not at all. Matt and Trey didn't make a movie to shove political opinions down their throats, because I'm sure that's completly what they are against. What the film does though, is what they wanted it do...make you shit yourself laughing. And they do it often. Oh and to end my little blurb on how ballsy the film is...have you ever seen two puppets have sex in every position possible?...No you haven't, not until you've seen Team America: World Police. Besides the ballsy content there's a lot more great things about this film. I loved the attention to detail Matt and Trey put on everything. When you think about it, these puppets are 2 feet tall, which means that everything is custom made. I love that, you have to have a whole lot of commitment to go through with a thing like this. That means making cars, chairs, clothes, buildings, and everything else just to fit these 2 feet tall puppets! Awesome, it really showed how much work they put into this movie, and I definitly think that it paid off. The attention to detail was great, but the characters of Team America were so well done! Everything about them was awesome, and anytime they said something that was meant to be somewhat funny, I laughed my ass of. There's Gary, the actor from New York City who has to go undercover to get the terrorist plans, Joe the simple jock Nebraska boy, Chris the tough martial-arts expert who has a deep hate for actors, Lisa who knows how a terrorist thinks (and very sexy in the puppet world), and finally Sarah the group mind reader. Kim Jong-Il the "wronrey" North Korean dictator is incredible, his character is so off the wall and laughable, it's great. The best is whenever he comes on screen and trys to say "Hello"...well, you'll see. My final praise and my little complaint about the film is the touchy scenes. Amazingly, though the movie has puppets it evokes a lot of emotions. Strange as that sounds the movie brings out love, violence, death, loss, rape (OH GOD), and some other things. The films touchy scenes were obviously meant to be funny, but at times they did touch a chord in a far-fetche'd way. The best scene to me would have to be the final "Dicks, Pussies, and Assholes" saying...just very well done, you'll see what I'm talking about when you see it. Though the touchy scenes were most of the time done well, there were definitly a few times when they were overused and they kind of got annoying or unfunny. But it didn't happen so much that it hurt the movie terribly. Team America still can stand on it's two legs strong, even with the minor flaw of the overdone touchy scenes. So did Team America live up to what I thought it would? YES! And "yes" means a lot for me because I had some high expectations for this movie. Off the wall content, lots of language, awesome one liners (Jesus Titty-Fucking Christ!), some crazy violence, a sex scene that I'm never going to forget and characters that aren't going to get old when you rewatch it. Team America is a ballsy film from Matt Stone and Trey Parker and everything in this film clicked for me and it ended up being one of the better movies I have seen in the year 2004. Final Thoughts: Team America: World Police is an off the wall comedy with just about everything you can want. Zany characters, funny paradoy songs, lots of language, funny violence, memorable one liners and just about everything else. There's comedy, action, and there's even a dash of emotion! Team America: World Police is a great film all around and not only the best comedy I've seen this year, but one of the better movies I have seen this year. |
