This is a movie that sports cool characters, an interesting premise, a creepy and atmospheric setting, as well as a few expected twists and turns here and there. On the same night that a convicted killer is getting a last chance appeal before being put to death, a huge rainstorm has forced ten people to take refuge at a roadside motel. Although they’ve never met each other there seems to be some kind of connection between them. As the rain continues to fall, people start to turn up dead and the survivors are left to figure out who’s committing the murders before they wind up dead themselves. Although more of a thriller than a horror film, per se there are still plenty of horror elements to be found here. The hotel setting is put to good use in creating a very creepy atmosphere that is only deepened by the non-stop rain. Although most of the action takes place outside there is still a claustrophobic feeling. Add to that some very bloody deaths and you have the makings of a very effective movie. One of the things that sets Identity apart from other similar themed movies is the superb cast. Ray Liotta exudes cool and steals the show out from under John Cusack’s shoes. Cusack was obviously meant to be the main character but he just can’t seem to match Liotta as the leading man. His performance was good, but that of Liotta heavily overshadowed it. Still, it was nice to see Cusack doing something other than a quirky romantic comedy. Amanda Peet was also good as the female lead. John C. McGinley also gave a good performance and once again showed why he is one of the most underrated character actors around. This guy is good no matter who he plays. The only two people I didn’t care for were Jake Busey and Clea Duvall. Both of them grated on my nerves. The plot, which borrowed elements from stories such as Ten Little Indians and Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express was extremely cool. I was able to figure out what was going on well before the characters on screen, but that didn’t ruin it for me. I was still impressed when the twist was finally revealed. I think Identity had one of the more original plot twists to come out of Hollywood in recent years and gave the movie a much deeper meaning. I must say that I enjoyed discussing the movie’s plot intricacies with my fiance who has a degree in psychology. She was able to clear up a few of the questions that I still had after the movie was over. Overall. Identity was a creepy and atmospheric movie that had cool characters, some awesome deaths and a cool premise. I can’t say that it was better than I expected because I had some pretty lofty expectations, but I can say that it was everything I thought it would be. Can’t ask for much more than that. Final Score – 8.5/10 |
