I've seen the best movie of this year so far. The film that I'm talking about is Identity. I had seen trailers for this film at least 4 times before other films I had seen, and every time I saw the trailer I was pulled into it more and more. Each time I saw it I couldn't stand not knowing what was going on at this hotel. I'll do the best I can not give away and spoilers and if I do I'll warn you before hand, but I just have to say that you need to see this movie. The story is simple. It's a dark and stormy night with flooded roads and nowhere to go. John Cusack plays a limo driver who says he's a former cop, he's taking the movie star, Rebecca DeMornay, and there is an accident that involves another three people who are a family. All five of them end up at a hotel together. Five other people eventually join them. Ray Liotta is a cop who is transporting a criminal played by Jake Busey, Clea DuVall and William Lee Scott are a just married couple, and Amanda Peet is a hooker who ran out of gas and was picked up by Cusack's character. All 10 of them end up at this motel on this very gloomy evening and are given rooms 1-10. While these 10 characters are being stranded at this motel, there is another story being told along with this one. It is of a judge who is being summoned in the middle of the night to a stay of execution hearing for a convicted murderer. The audience is not told how these two stories interconnect but we are sure that they do, and that we will find out in the end. Before you know what is happening, murder and mayhem begin. I will not go into detail about any of the incidents in question to save the effect of them for you. Some of the killings are able to be explained and some of them are not able to be explained. This is what the characters are trying to find out themselves. They are trying to find out which one of them among them did this, or is it some sort of supernatural phenomenon. At the resolution of the film, some people may sit back and sigh and think how they knew it all along. I think that many people will be able to figure out before the final resolution, I figured it out myself some time before the characters themselves did. The resolution to Identity is perfectly orchestrated. The writer uses each and every character perfectly to add to the story and to add to the final climax. The idea itself was a very ingenius story and one that was very original. Overall the acting was spot on. John Cusack was very good as the limo driver who kept his cool and Ray Liotta was great as the cop who can't hold his temper. Both of the characters were played out very well and very effectivel with the film. John C. McGinley is who stole the film for me. I loved his way of dealing with his character. He was perfect as the bumbling and nervous step-father who was always nervous and overprepared. Amanda Peet was great as always, and the other actors did what they had to do to help further the plot. Overall the acting was above average. The running time impressed me very much. Each act of the story is a perfect length. The director gave us exactly what we needed to know in each part and then moved on to the next, there was no extra dialogue and nothing was given to us that didn't further the plot. This was very effective to keep the audience attentive and to keep them paying attention enough to understand what was going on and what eventually happened. Overall this was a great film in my opinion. As I said before this was the best film I've seen so far this year, and will likely be one of the best I will see. I can't wait to be able to see it again so I can catch anything that I missed and try and find out more about what it all meant. I reccomend that you go see this film or at least see it when it comes out on DVD. 9/10
