What's scarier than the shit going on in this movie is to think that there is a mind out there capable of producing something this psychotic and fucked up! I remember the feeling I had walking out of Memento way back when... that disorienting, lost, bewildered feeling coming down from a mindfuck high. I really have missed that feeling as of late, when I have gone into a theater expecting something crazy as hell and coming out feeling like I wasted my money. Actually, there are exactly three recent movies that come to mind when I think of great thrillers: this one, The Ring, and Frailty. Aside from The Ring, all of these were movies that I watched with relatively low expectations and came out pleasantly surprised. Ok, so, a cop, an ex-cop, a hooker, a serial killer, and several strangers walk into a motel, and.... sounds like the opening line of a crappy joke... but the effect of this movie is definately not laughable, just very sick and bizarre. I refuse to give away much about this movie, since it's a must-see; but I will say this -- the opening and the background story are surprisingly the most crucial elements of the film -- you will figure out what I'm talking about after you watch it. Actually it starts out seeming between poor and so-so, with too much rain, eye-grabbing editing, a snoozer story, and all the other things that have been done so many times before. But after the first "shocker" involving a woman being hit by a car, I began to lose my grip on my nachos and become capitvated in the story. Then the movie progressed with what could be just a "fun" horror movie with lots of death and a possible mystery -- except with that weird background story looming into the picture every once in a while. **I'm not spoiling the movie any further** blah blah blah... a really FUCKED UP twist of events, and I walk out of the theater asking a full cache of mind-blowing questions. A movie that has me walking out, still somewhat crenching, asking questions all the way back to my destination, and going "WHOA!" to the point that I could watch this again in theaters, is definately a rare thing. Certainly not what I expected -- and something that I can't recall being done before, which is a major plus. If you are scared easily, be warned, it's very bloody, and lots of boo's are scattered about... but otherwise, if you are into being had by a good head trip, check this one out for sure. |
