"What Lies Beneath" 2000 Directed by: Robert Zemeckis Written by: Sarah Kernochan, Clark Gregg Starring: Harrison Ford, Michelle Pfeiffer 8/10 Plot: A baby boomer couple adjust to life alone after their daughter goes off to college. The mother (Pfeiffer) begins to hear voices and notice strange objects in the house. The husband (Ford) cannot determine if she is experiencing a psychotic break or if there is a spirit in their house. Deep dark secrets are revealed as the nature of the manifestations are revealed. Review: This is Zemeckis's homage to Alfred Hitchcock. Sure, entire shots are lifted from the master but I think they are honorary in nature. The film drips with that old feeling and hell even sounds like a Hitchcock film. The plot has a little bit of "Rear Window", a bit of "Psycho", and a bit of just an old-fashioned ghost story all weaved together. We all think we know where it's going but it's still fun to guess. The acting is solid with Ford taking on a type-breaking role. Pfeiffer displays something of a two-pronged performance. Her character transforms from crippled dove into She-Ra. The score is haunting and yet melodic all at the same time. Minimal effects are needed and are anything but distracting (an odd feature in modern horror flicks). Though the film is linked to other genre flicks it can stand on its own two feet. This is what filmmakers are struggling with. Instead of originality with definitive inspiration they simply settle to remake a film (DotD, Texas Chainsaw, Amityville Horror, Evil Dead, Hills Have Eyes, etc. etc. etc.).
