WHAT LIES BENEATH was a solid picture... the critics banded together on this one and held bias, screaming "Hitchcock rip-off" and "trite and predictable." Too blinded by their association with the herd, they weren't able to recognize the re-working of a fantastic tale that haunted many a viewer. From the opening scenes (where Michelle Pfeiffer's character is spying on the couple next door) to three-quarters through when the "missing girl's" identity is uncovered, the pace and tension are fast and high... and the ambience and mood is pervasively chilling. Pfeiffer WAS incredible. The story deals on two levels, as we get a mystery-thriller, as well as a sort of "coming-of-age" story about a woman who was under the false impression that her life was perfect. It's really a story all about duplicity, and wising up to such. (8/10)
