The film demonstrates the beauty of film-noir, and its timeless qualities that will live on into the post-modern era. Billy Bob Thornton is tailor-made for the role as a confused barber who doesn't talk too much, Frances McDormand is one of my favourite actresses - she always takes the limelight with her sophisticated portrayals. The story is insightful, there are touches which remind me of another great Coen masterpiece, "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" but the cinematography is the defining feature of this small but splendorous film. |
