There is gore in the bucket-loads in this film, especially at the end. The cabin fever virus has rather horrifying effects. This is especially noticeable when Marcy is shaving her legs and her skin begins peeling off…ugh, that was just awesome gore. Great, unsettling stuff. There is also a man-eating dog in the movie that rips victims apart, there's a whole bunch of shootings and stabbings and just general unpleasantness. The makeup is done amazingly, just look at the shot of Karen's face decaying and her teeth showing through her skin to convince you of that. This is definitely one for the books if you're a gorehound. --Though it doesn't last long, I enjoyed seeing the character reactions to the virus. Some run, some hide, some resort to violence and fighting while others stay and try to rationally help their friends. There's moments that are sometimes very creative, intense and unique, and a few of the characters are quite entertaining during their struggle (Bert especially). --For better or worse the movie did go off formula and I appreciated that. This isn't a slasher movie with an unmasked killer and it's not a movie where there's a romantic kiss at the end to seal the deal, it's anything but those above two clichés. Roth is a filmmaker unafraid to take chances and sometimes it was better for the movie. Though the majority of the time his direction was seriously lacking in a number of ways. THE BAD: --I was bored during this movie. It takes a long while to get to the good stuff, and I don't mean story-wise (we never get to the good stuff with this), gore-wise. There are bright spots during its 92-minute running time but by God it felt much longer than that to me. I just kept thinking 'when is this going to end' or 'when is this going to get good' towards the end of the movie, and too much of the start focuses on the teens doing nothing at all. What was the purpose of the weed guy? Did we really need the extraneously long sequence with the deputy talking about partying? I didn't really find any of this funny or original…just get to the 'story' already. --The ending of this movie is, simply put, terrible. Paul makes this totally random and ridiculous transition into becoming a mass murderer. It's understandable why he kills people in some situations but others it's just like Roth wants more gore in the movie so he makes Paul kill a person. Way to ruin a character that was otherwise intriguing, reminiscent of Shelley from "Friday the 13th Part 3". The absolute final scene in the movie, where we realise what the old man was talking about when he said "it's for the niggers" is atrocious and pointless, the writers obviously just wanted to show the audience they could make a clever joke. Dear God, I thought I was watching a whole different roll of film when that came along. --Will someone just shoot that Dennis kid? I hated him so much. He didn't make any sense and the actor looked a girl. What the hell was up with him when he screamed "PANCAKES" and started going all kung fu on Bert? That was so completely LAME in every respect. That right there is the pinpoint for when the film started becoming a 4/10. It is followed up by a boring and badly acted chase sequence too, which did nothing for the film's plot in the long run other than to…oh, add more gore, of course. --I liked most of the characters at the start but quite a bit before the end I just wanted everyone to die. They started getting on my nerves and doing annoying things and the movie at that point was just so bloody boring. Not a good sign when you're cheering when the hero's are dying. RATING: 4/10 - Not a complete atrocity, I've definitely seen much worse than this. But the problem is "Cabin Fever" had so much promise. I loved the idea of a flesh-eating virus; it could've made a scary and original horror movie. Instead, we get an "Evil Dead" rip-off that is so completely laughable in spots it resembles a made-to-be-bad camp film from the 80's. IF YOU LIKED THIS MOVIE I RECOMMEND: The Blair Witch Project (9/10) Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows (2/10) The Evil Dead (7/10) Resident Evil (8/10) Wrong Turn (7/10) |
