Surreal musical romance starring Nicole Kidman as a Parisian nightclub singer who must choose between a dorky rich patron and a smoldering poor writer. The film innovates an operatic musical format in which songs of different Twentieth Century genres are chosen for their hook-lines, and performed in loud, overbearing medleys. Love it or hate it, if you buy into the childish romance angle you can't get enough of the overwhelming visual and sound images. If you don't feel like being dazzled, you're in for a long and painful wait for the movie's merciful end.
