We are given the view of humanity at its worse. Its confronting, its intense. By the end of it I could barely breathe. Aronofsky is a major talent, his adaption of a very treasured piece of underground literature is near perfect. His film making has a very obvious, at times admittedly stilted, but it massively increases the impact of the themes he has dealt with in this film and his last Pi -- paranoia, devastation and addiction. His handling of the drug taking scenes are masterful, imagery is sharp and flowing. A trip out scene, a red dress dream and an intense finale montage are all presented with such an impressive ability it could make you believe in film making again even if you had watched Jurassic Park 3, Joe Dirt and The Sweetest Thing back to back. Obviously the performances are revolutionary, Burstyn can die happy to know what she has created in her performance -- perfection. Desperation has never been so better communicated. The soundtrack is similairly dealt with as in Pi, a beat and an ifusion with classical. It compliments the most devastating scenes perfectly. A major achievement in beautiful noise. Selby's novel has more time to deal with the desperation of the impacts of the heroin drought... but Aronofsky presents this as the only flaw. Don't go into the film without expecting to wake up crying the next morning, your nose running and your view of the world deadened. 10. |
