We have movies like Se7en, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, and Fargo which are all very dark and disturbing in their own way. BUT all have substance and something more than darkness JUST for the sake of being dark. This cannot be said about The Butterfly Effect, Ashton Kutcher's attempt at serious acting. He does suceed, but not in the right movie. The film is chalk full of extremly disturbing situations (ones that some people may not be able to handle), dark and morbid settings, a cruel display of human nature, and absolutly no substance to excuse this morbid pile of waste. Its dark and disturbing just for the sake of being dark and disturbing. NO real situations, and no real characters to stay attached to. I just couldnt take this movie seriously. It literally made me sick (this from a person whos favorite movies include Pulp Fiction, Mullhollond Drive, and various other disturbing flicks). Its cruel and horrifing in a way I have never seen. The world would be MUCH better off without this movie. All "plot" has been used before so the writters/directors fill in the holes with extremly dark and depressing settings and situations. A TOTAL DOWNER MOVIE 2/10 |
