The Butterfly Effect The Kutch drops his goofy antics for once to headline this supernatural thriller about a young guy named Evan Treborn (Kutcher) and his newfound ability to travel at will through alternate time periods by reading excerpts from his childhood diaries. Trippy. The story starts in the past, chronicling Evan's journey through his troubled childhood and subsequent blackouts during key traumatic events. Reading the diary entries that lead up to these gaps in his memory, he's transported to that moment in his life where he inhabits the body of his younger self and possesses the ability to alter past events to change the future. Topping the list of priorities is his childhood friend/love interest Kayleigh (Amy Smart) whose life takes a turn into the miserable because of the aforementioned events. Others on Evan's list of setting things right for is his buddy Lenny (Eldon Henson) and Tommy (William Lee Scott), Kayleigh's jackass brother. Each time our hapless protagonist goes back in time to help someone, something always seems to go awry; good things happening for one character may mean dire consequences for another. It's this juggling act between past and present and the ripples sent by even the smallest change made by Evan to the timeline that gives this butterfly its wings. A very cool concept, needless to say. Kutcher surprised me by showing some actual acting ability, but his performance was uneven and it's obvious that's he's new on the dramatic block. Amy Smart, Eldon Henson, and William Lee Scott are all adequate in their parts, but aren't much better or worse than The Kutch. Malora Walters and Eric Stoltz show up for the part of a slightly neurotic mother and Kaleigh's perv father, respectively. This is a movie that hooked me with its great premise, but failed to reel me in completely due to some noticeable plot holes and some average performances. Still, it's a surprise considering Kutcher's current cinematic track record. Perhaps the goof has some untapped talent after all... 7/10
