MYSTIC RIVER Wow. First the awesome experience that was Kill Bill: Vol. 1, now this sure to be classic. Clint Eastwood has outdone himself, in what I feel is his greatest cinematic achievement since his dreary '92 western classic Unforgiven. He serves up another dreary dish, set against the backdrop of a small seaside village. This is an unforgettable movie that will pull your heartstrings, make you cringe from the ugliness and violence it realistically and unapologetically portrays, but most of all it will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on your mind for a long time afterward. The story begins by setting up the relationship between a trio of longtime friends, Jimmy Markham (Sean Penn), Dave Boyle (Tim Robbins), and Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon), and the event of their childhood that would forever alter their lives. Some years later, a tragic event pulls together these three former friends once more, each under vastly different circumstances, and forces them to collide in a web of suspicion, murder, and betrayal. Sean Penn delivers an emotionally raw performance that I feel is the best of 2003. I felt his pain, I felt his anger, I felt his insatiable appetite for vengeance, and I felt his guilt. This has "Oscar worthy performance" written all over it. Tim Robbins is as equally impressive playing the emotionally scarred Boyle with a quiet insanity that hints noticeably at his painful past. Kevin Bacon gives one of the best shows of his career, and I appreciated the chemistry between him and Laurence Fishburne (Whitey Powers) which gave the film a lighthearted side and welcome balance to the dark aura surrounding the rest of the movie. Fishburne has all the best lines, and surprise surprise, didn't remind me of Morpheus at all. The rest of the cast was stellar as well, with Annabeth Markham (Laura Linney) as the strong willed and proud wife of Jimmy and Celeste Boyle (Marcia Gay Harden), Dave's meek, quiet wife being two noticeable standouts. Mystic River is a solid drama, mystery and effective character study and is undeniably one of the truly great movies of 2003. It deserves all the accolades it gets in my opinion, and this is coming from an action junkie 10/10
