My bad - that is what I was thinking. But nevertheless, still not as real or effective as the CGI version (although it was better than the 70s). Quote: b) The film is racist. There is no excuse for the Natives on the island being so violent, without any civilization or culture. I appreciate maybe it's just me that feels that way. Is it reasonable to point out that in the entire rest of the film there is only one other person of colour? But I still don't understand what race has to do with it. The lack of civilization is understandable - that's what makes them and the island so mysterious, civilization has never touched them. They do have a little culture - they kidnapped Anne to sacrifice to the big ape. The violence can be for their protection - they don't know who these people are. And the other person of color, the first mate (can't remember his name) was a pretty prominent figure, a fatherly figure, a likeable character. I still don't get how featuring the natives as savage can be considered racist. Quote: c) Yes, the T Rex fight was longer and had three T Rexes. That did not make it better, it did pander to the audience. In the end, I found the rapid editing that PJ used in those sequences similar to the choppy fast editing used in martial arts movies where the actor does not know any martial arts--you try to make up with it with confusing, fast editing. That did not work, at least for me, in the T Rex sequence. While I agree with you that the martial arts flicks with fast editing is annoying, it's different here because the only actor/actress in the scene is Anne - and all Naomi Watts had to do was wave her arms and body around (hot thought, isn't it?) in front of a green screen. The rest is CGI - for me, it just makes it more exciting and adrenaline-pumping. That was my favorite scene/sequence in the entire movie. Quote: d) Yes, I could figure out Ann and Jack did not want to be part of displaying Kong in New York. However, why should in a three hour, seven minute movie, I have to assume anything? There were clearly big chunks of exposition cut from the final version of the film. On the other hand, we spend five or ten minutes simply with the rocks around Skull Island. It makes the movie a little more interesting, doesn't it? I mean, up until we see the 'other' actress in front of Kong, we all assumed it was Anne. If there was a scene before all that showing Anne absolutely refusing to humiliate the ape further, it would have taken away the effectiveness of that scene. I think it added a little suspense and mystery (although that's not the right word for it) to it. Quote: e) The film worked well emotionally, and certainly developed the Ann Darrow King Kong relationship much more. And, arguably, better, although it truly went overboard at times. You should remember, writing about the original Kong, that it managed to create a huge amount of sympathy on the audience's part, yet without any pandering. Kong was indeed a monster in that film. A far more powerful and scarey monster than the Kong portrayed in the remake--for my money, anyway. Yes, the original was more scary - definitely. I think I just liked the more human aspect to the new one. I like it when non-human characters or objects receive human-like characteristics in movies; it's the symbolism lover in me I guess. I blame my 12th grade English teacher . Enjoy your lunch.
