It is not, as many have already noted, an epic storyline (although it could have been). The length is a sign of self indulgence rather than respect for the audience--PJ gave the audience what he thought they wanted to see (MORE) rather than a tight film. Second, although the effects are excellent, and King Kong very well presented, including with facial expressions, the pot bellied big ape just did not quite have the strength of the leaner, meaner original. I totally disagree. While the original was cool, it still came about as a symptom of lack of technology. The beast looked like a man in a suit - which is what it was. Plus, the original came off just as a monster - nothing else, meant to scare off everyone and anyone. The new one received character and depth - PJ having introduced a love story into the fray. Plus, I think the T-Rex battle was MUCH better in the new one. For starters, there were three dinos instead of the one. Also, it brings more close-ups, close calls with Anne, and the adrenaline pumping scene where Kong roars in victory. Quote: Fourth, despite the film's overlength, there were still narrative jumps. Apart from the obvious of getting Kong onto the boat, there was why the Naomi Watts and Adrien Brody characters did not go along with Jack Black in New York . . . I thought this was obvious - she didn't go along because she didn't like the way Kong was being treated. She cared for the ape and wanted no part in ridiculing the ape. Brody didn't go along probably because of his feelings and respect for Watts' character. Quote: . . . why Brody keeps working for Black after being kidnapped. The script writing just was not that good or, conversely, too much was left on the editing room floor. The narrative jumps include how Black is able to rent a ship without any money etc.--the captain looked like too much of a realist to be conned. What choice did Brody have? Plus, Black's character was a convincing SOB and promised him all this crap. How did he look like a realist? The captain didn't know he didn't have any money. His appearance as a realist had nothing to do with it. Quote: Fifth, the film is, very sorry, racist. The original film presented the Islanders as people with a culture. They did not hurt anyone. In PJ's film, the Islanders are unrelenting savages who killed a crew member in a totally unprovoked attack. The natives appear as much monsters as the dinosaurs on the island. I could care less about the rationalization of PJ and his writers that the natives were driven nuts by the crazy island. Maybe they were. But what is presented onscreen is just plain racist. What does race have to do with it? Presenting lack of culture does not make the film racist. Maybe cliche, but race has nothing to do with it. Both movies presented the natives as black people. The difference between cultured and savaged has nothing to do with race. Quote: Sixth, the original King Kong film makers were, in the end, smart to leave out the spider pit sequence. It was self indulgent and slowed the storyline. Too bad PJ did not show the same controls. Again, the effects were excellent, and the sequence worked at the time--but, afterwards (both first and second time I saw the film) I wondered, why is this here, and why is it going on so long? Just so I can see bugs? First, your already mentioned the film was too long. Second, it adds to the atmosphere of the island. It may not add to the storyline of the overall movie, but it does to the 2nd (of three) act - where they're on the island. It shows that Kong is not the only oversized animal on the island. Quote: The film was both enjoyable and disappointing. It still does not match the original for overall impact. The first told its story swiftly with respect for its audience. The remake told its story self indulgently with a whole lot of pandering to the audience. While endless battle scenes seemed to have worked in the LOTR triology (just how many "final" battles were there in LOTR, anyway?), it did not work here. But unlike the original, this movie brought more than just a 25-foot ape wreaking havoc on an island, a blonde, and New York City. It brought a love story and a deeper respect for King Kong. I felt more sorry for him in the newest version than the original. While I like both - I gotta say I liked the 2005 version better than the original.
