The screenplay is simply stellar. It adds so much depth to Captain Kirk's character that we never saw before. This is the future, and in many ways this is a different Kirk. He is aging, and he knows it. He feels that he is trapped behind a desk as the last of his years where he can be Captain are wasting away. When Khan shows up, Kirk a bit out of practice in the business of being a Captain, and the results are almost tragic. Ultimately, however, it is Khan who forces Kirk to once again become the captain he was always meant to be and, as Kirk puts it at the end of the film, he feels young again. Further evidence of the humanity behind Spock's Vulcan "inhumanity" is showcased in the ultimate form. He gives his life for the crew. This is probably the most poignant and powerful moment in the entire Star Trek mythos. And, of course, we must mention Ricardo Montelbahn's performance as Khan. It is a stellar character he portrays . . . a mix of Captain Ahab and the best of Shakespearean characters. It is worth noting that Star Trek often succeeded the most when it borrowed from Shakespeare, and Montelbahn appears to have realized this. |
