Directed by- Tony Scott Starring- Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette I’d like to apologize ahead of time for all the (there will be many) G.U.M errors that will be in this. People are always asking me for movie recommendations. Usually I’ll get real pumped by this, (besides sex, talking about movies is the high point of my life) I’ll sit them down, and say “Well, what kind of movie do you want to see?” whereupon they’ll say “A real good movie.” Immediately I’ll blurt out True Romance, but alas they usually don’t jump on it so easily, now they want to get specific, they’ll say “A real good action flick.” “True Romance.” “I want a great love story too.” “True Romance.” “I’d like a movie that feels different from everything else.” “True Romance.” (And here’s where they start getting a little peeved) “It should have an all star cast!” “True Romance.” “I want a movie that makes me feel good at the end, I don’t want a downer.” “Again, True Romance.” (At this point I’m being glared at) “Give me a movie, with Christopher Walken Being a kickass mob boss, Samuel L. Jackson saying one of the funniest lines ever, Gary Oldman playing a crazy druggy, James Gandolfini as the worlds most badass hit man, Brad Pitt as a pot head, Dennis Hopper as one cool mofo, and Val Kilmer as Elvis!!” “Yep, sounds like True Romance to me.” And then, I’m on the floor because I’m “being a smart-ass”. In this movie we have a hip comic book/ Kung-Fu fanatic named Clarence (Christian Slater), and a fun-loving prostitute named Alabama (Patricia Arquette) who end up falling in love. The two of them marry, but there is one major obstacle to their happiness - Alabama is a call girl employed by nasty and murderous pimp Drexl (Gary Oldman). Clarence decides to win his wife's freedom by confronting Drexl, we are then given one of the coolest confrontational scenes ever, as Clarence and Drexl try to “psych out” each other, in the end Clarence kills Drexl and mistakenly takes off with a suitcase of stolen uncut cocaine. The drugs are worth millions, and Clarence decides to head to Los Angeles where his best childhood friend and aspiring actor Dick Ritchie (Michael Rapaport) is supposed to help him sell it to Hollywood celebrities. The mob, the cops and, no doubt, some other hired killers pursue Clarence and Alabama. A series of unfortunate events befall the couple as various people try to track down the drugs. Clarence’s father (Hopper) is murdered by a mob boss (Walken), and Alabama is savagely beaten by a hit man (Gandolfini), eventually the cops catch wind of the drug sale and a sting is arranged. The end of this movie has one of the most Tarentino-esque moments I can think of, a Mexican stand off involving the mob, the cops, and some heavily armed bodyguards, what happens next is –of course- a bloodbath (all while Clarence is seeking guidance from his imaginary friend: Elvis) Clarence and Alabama escape the ensuing madness alive and with the money. This is one of those movies that made me wish I was actually in there with those characters (even if I end up coming home in a body-bag).Every moment of the movie is expertly directed, remarkably well written, and last but not least amazingly well acted, the only proof you need is the back and forth between Walken and Hopper. This scene just oozes tension as you come to understand that Hopper knows how to make this Sicilian mob boss lose his cool. Very very cool stuff here. While this is a Tarentino witty action fest, it’s real theme is simply that love will conquer all, Clarence and Alabama meet and fall in love, they are then sent through a slew of horrendous trials and tribulations that they must overcome in order to stay with each other, and they succeed because their love is pure, and we are never given a scene where one could think anything but that. |
