This movie is really great, Tony Scott and Denzel Washington are a perfect combination (see also Man on Fire). Yes, although improbable, this film doesn't really constrain itself with the laws of our reality and steps outside those boundaries by using Scott's signature direction and Paul Cameron's cinematography. The film is a little hard to track (the techno-jargon to explain the "surveillance" was a bit far-reaching) but I can definitely tell that I would have to watch the film multiple times to pick up some subtleties I know I missed. The plot is highly creative and the pacing reminded me of Enemy of the State. A real gem in this movie is Erika Alexander's contribution as one of the technicians. She provides a needed dose of female rationale to the otherwise all male crowd in the "viewing trailer" and her emotion during Minuti's murder interjected the scene with a note of human compassion. Also, Deja Vu takes an unflinching look at the devastation that still exists in New Orleans. Going from the French Quarter to the ghettos that haven't changed since the flood receeded, this film managed to also capture the spirit and sadness of the city. A great film for a night of action-packed viewing. 7/10 |
