Even though I'm not one to typically watch war movies, I found Saving Private Ryan engaging. Spielberg directs beautifully and with a great deal of thought and substance to both special effects and plot/character development. One thing that impressed me about Saving Private Ryan was the portrayal of the nature of war. As NotKeyserSoze put it, Spielberg shows us that war is ugly...war is hell...it is shocking and not very glamourous. Spielberg portrays war as one imagines it to be. There are no heroes...no buff, patriotic American soldiers machine-gunning 20 faceless enemies and escaping unscathed (see Windtalkers). When a soldier gets shot in Saving Private Ryan he bleeds. Also impressive was the quality and realism of sound, and the use of silence adding a ghostly effect in some of the action packed or dramatic scenes. Definetely my top pick for a war flick 10/10 P.S If you liked Saving Private Ryan you should also check out the Spielberg/Hanks mini-series Band of Brothers
