Something happened inbewtween the movie and the show to change that though. Inara and Book left. Mal is at odds with the doctor in a serious way. They are much worse off. The interpersonal drama in the show has come to a head and these people have gone from being a family to a dysfunctional one. I think the humor is still there, its just mixed in with the pain and depression of this close knit group being torn apart. Its somewhere that if the show was allowed to continue would have happened eventually. The only difference is that later seasons would show how they came back together after the tragedy.
