I love netflix and blockbuster online and have had subscriptions to both of them but a lot of people have an in hand syndrome. The ability to pick up what you want when you want it and not have to wait for the mail will always keep people renting at video stores but just in smaller numbers. And after working in a video store for three years I can tell you %75 of what is rented is new releases, it may even be more than that. So in comes red box, same in hand ability but cheaper (rentals are only a $1 a night) and with so many many locations. On my way to work and within driving distance from my home there is five red boxes and only one traditional rental store. Granted all you can really get out of my redbox is new releases or the occasional older film (I rented the 1957 3:10 to yuma out of one a few weeks back) which will keep me going back to netflix and Hollywood video for older movies but almost all my new releases are now rented out of Red Box. Yesterday I tried to rent the Assassination Of Jesse James from Hollywood and was told they weren't carrying it because it was a Blockbuster exclusive. So I went to redbox.com and saw they had it there, kept my eye on it for a copy to be returned and rented it online the moment it was. All I had to do was drive to the store and swipe my card and I had my movie. Everywhere I go now I always see lines for people to use redbox in my town, we have 10 redboxes, 2 Hollywood videos and one mom and pop rental store. |
