But in The Life Aquatic, the humor was dreadfully unfunny and the characters were utterly boring. And the thing is, Bill Murray is playing a character not unlike the one he played in Lost in Translation and would later play in Broken Flowers. But his characters in Lost in Translation and Broken Flowers were far more interesting and engaging and the movies were infinitely better, ESPECIALLY Lost in Translation which has gone on to be one of my all time favorite movies. I didn't give a hoot about any of the characters in The Life Aquatic, despite the best efforts of Murray and the wonderful Cate Blanchett. It's not their fault. It's the writing. SPOILERS! When Owen Wilson's character dies in the movie, I didn't have any reaction to it. None. I didn't care one bit. He was a boring character. Steve Zissou was a boring character. That is why I hated The Life Aquatic. I pretty much hated it. A) if you can discard most of the films action as comedy, thats your problem. Not the movie's.\ B) I hate to say it, but his characters in Broken Flowers and Tenenbaums are nothing like Steve Zissou. Zissou was rather loud and egotistical, which is nothing like the mostly reserved Raleigh St Claire or his more quiet character from Broken Flowers. C) Lost in Translation is one of the worst movies of the decade so far. D) The script is one of the most complex things I've seen in literally, years. Too bad you couldn't enjoy it. E) Again, your fault and not the films. F) Again, your fault and not the movie's. If you couldn't invest in Ned and Steve's problem in my opinion, you have no soul. |
