And each and every single upcoming flick he wants to do is another throwback to cheesy exploitation flicks. It's like he's a one-trick pony that can't expand into anything else other than making self-absorbed "Hey look at how much of a film geek I am" homages to exploitation flicks. In fact, I'll give him some slack and admit he's not the only director doing it. Just the most respected one. Too many directors these days are trying to revive dead genres and bring 70's and 80's flicks back, and it's starting to get old. Why not just create something new? I haven't seen Death Proof, except for the first 5 minutes, which I'll admit made me smile. Kill Bill, I thought was a really unique film. Someone made the comparison to DJing as a negative criticism, but I actually made that sampling comparison before, but as a note of interest. No, he might not be making groundbreaking films, but a lot of people feel that he never did. Reservoir Dogs has been highly cited for its influence, and Pulp Fiction, while arguably his more original film, was co-written by Roger Avery, to what extent, we'll never know. What we do know is that with his most successful work, he shared writing credits. Don't get me wrong, though, I think QT in the early-90s was am important director, but not because he was showing new techniques or creating new ideas, but because he was ushering in the era of independent filmmaking. That was, in the opinion of may, his biggest claim - in 1994 he made one of the highest grossing films on a shoestring budget. Granted it was a damn fine film, but I believe people's reactions had less to do with him doing thigns like no one had done them before, and more to do with him making a film devoid of major studio influence that had content and subject matter that people had never seen dealt with in such a way, which was something of a staple of independent film. (Now, oddly enough, the trend for independents is to address more traditional subject matters, just in that characteristic low-key, alternative lifestyles way.) I'm not disagreeing with anything your saying, but I think you are hitting the guy with a shotgun when maybe precision lasers are needed. It's not his body of work, as you've stated - love his first 3, and can even deal with KillBill.... But his mouth is another story. The dude runs off at the mouth and says shit that doesn't even make sense (remember the sequel to Kill Bill was going to be anime and he is waiting 20 years to do it???) I think that behavior of his puts him in worse regards than he'd be otherwise. He hasn't actually made that many of the films you are describing, but listening to him talk, it's a whole 'nother story. I actually think if QT would take a vow of silence, he'd probably have made twice the films he has as of this point. as he admitted on the Jay Leno Show (of all places) though, he's does a lot of ecstasy, and though he hasn't said so, I would assume coke as well. Either way, just with him doing X, there's no other way around it -- the dude is just all feeling good and saying stuff that sounds much better to him than to anyone else. Chances he'll at some point get some "morning after" regrets. |
