| I think some of you are trying to defame Tarantino, as a filmmaker, but at the same time... I can't totally explain it, but FatSak, you say he hasn't made a good movie since Jackie Brown, but Kill Bill Vol. 2 was a close call.... What I'm getting at is that he's essentially made 2 movies since Jackie Brown. Kill Bill and Death Proof. He made 3 movies you consider great, then 2 movies that were homage flicks, and therefore you didn't like. I suppose what I'm not getting is that his filmography is still more-for-the-better, even splitting Kill Bill, he's shooting .50 --- The part that sort of gets me though.... Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown are in a large part homage films themselves. Tarantino has always worn his influences on his sleeve, but with his last two films, instead of making the crime films he is known for, he took on different genres, which happen to be cheesy in another way. With Reservoir Dogs, it was like, "Oh look, Riffifi and the European new wave!" When I first saw Fiction, as did most other people, our first thoughts were, "Oh, it's like a throw back to 70s exploitation flicks." and then again with Jackie Brown. I see what you are saying about him relying on homage and genre flicks as inspiration, but what you laude half his filmography for, you have no issue with the other half. Then you make it sound like, even though it is really only 2 films, that he's made hundreds of bad films since making 3 great ones, when really it hasn't been many at all. I think what it is, maybe, is that it's taken him so long to make those 2 films. The early-to-mid 90s, he broke out 2 definite classics and one arguable one. Then it took him 10 years to make 2 more films that are along the same lines, albeit homaging different genres. So I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say that you shouldn't have an issue with him. I'm just questioning why the shittiness you see in his last two projects seems to outweigh what you see as greatness in his first 3 projects --- Do you buy that theory that it's a time line-type issue. Just that it's taken him so much longer to put out GH and KB? If QT should be cited for anything, it should be the reason this thread exists. He's almost the Britney Spears of talented directors, in that he gets high off his gourd, and anything he says, no matter how ridiculous, gets taken at face value by fans and onlookers. Most of us though, recognize drug talk. Quote: "Okay, right. It will be a 3 hour ASCII art movie about my penis. It's going to be a throwback to Andy Warhol, right? And I'm getting Tito Brown, the drag queen who sold Tina Turner her wig in 1978 is going to play Dungeon Master, because I used to play the old school D & D back in the day, right. Oh, and the whole thing will be Cantonese with German subtitles, becacause THAT'S the only way you can make a 3 hour prick movie, right? Okay, but wait... wait... check this out... a cast of nothing but midgets. If we do this, okay, we have to do it following in the footsteps of one of the all time greats: Chevy Chase in 1981's UNDER THE RAINBOW!!!! Okay?" |
