Brothers: Directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father), this tells the story of a young man (Jake Gyllenhaal) who must comfort the family of his older brother (Tobey Maguire) after he disappears in Afghanistan. Rounding out the cast is Natalie Portman as Tobey's wife. Being a fan of both MLF and ITNOFTF, I've been waiting for the next poingnant masterpiece from Jim, and this could do the trick. The cast doesn't look too shabby either. Release is currently set for December 5. Trial of the Chicago 7: Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Aaron Sorkin, this chronicles the trial of some of America's leading anti-war activists for the violence at the Chicago 68 convention. Among them are Abbie Hoffman (Sacha Baron Cohen) and Black Panther leader Bobby Seale (Will Smith). Rounding out the cast are Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jeff Daniels, Keven Spacey, Colin Hanks, and Adam Arkin. Is it just me or could this be one of 2008's crown jewels? Doubt: Written and directed by John Patrick Shanley, this film stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Father Flynn--a priest accused of molesting a student, Meryl Streep as Sister Aloysus (spelling is wrong here)--the nun investigating the accusations, and Amy Adams as one of the teachers at the school. This, along with CHICAGO 7 and SYNECDOCHE NY, could complete yet another Phillip Seymour Hoffman trifecta of great performances Man, fall 2008 keeps looking better and better. 2008 might be the best year for movies so far this decade. |
