You can turn your arguement any which way. Johnny Depp's peformance is one of his best. His facial expressions are key in this film. You study the characters body language and his face. Todd dispenses a sense of justice that he feels those that support the judge deserve. In Plainview, the delivery of the film's dialogue and the basic actions of the character are all that are needed to make a conclusion. Of course Day-Lewis' performance is superior, its beside the point. Todd may not be viewed as especially sympathetic but he is tragic. I found the entire thing to be rather depressing, a piece full of villains. However, I didn't find Todd to be especially evil, just misguided. Warped, jaded. Tomato, tomAto..don't call other people's ideas stupid and idiotic, on a forum that's just as bad. As for Todd, I can't argue with you since you hold the film in such high esteem and i feel i kinda wasted my money by going to the cinema to see it. You think your theories are grounded, i think they're being pulled out of thin air. You think it's one of Depp's best performances, i think it's undoubtedly one of his worst. You find complexity through his expression and body language, all i saw from his face was slight adjustments of the same expression, the eyebrow-frown, and his body, nothing much. You probably think his singing is good too, i think it's shite. And so on and so forth. I really wanted to like this film, I've been waiting for it ever since i heard of its production and it's a shame it didn't work for me. Maybe i have to see it again to realize what you're saying, (i doubt it cause i paid close attention, but who knows). So whatever, let's stop this and go our ways with our opinions. Some people agree with you, some with me, that's the way of movies. I do agree with you that Todd is meant to be a tragic character though, which i believe kinda goes with my sympathy theory at the end. PS: As for Plainview, it's not as simple as you make it. A lot of friends and some people on this board thought Plainview was an evil monster like what i thought when i first saw it. When i saw it again, i realized there's much more than that and i sincerely believe other people will see that as well. Maybe I'll see that with Sweeney Todd too. |
