1. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End-10/10-The third installment of the definitive swashbuckling trilogy of our time is spectacular filmmaking on all levels...it’s the best and most entertaining film of the year! 2. Into the Wild-9/10-Emile Hirsch is brilliant as a tragic loner, who ventures into the Alaskan wilderness in director Sean Penn's heartbreaking masterpiece...Eddie Vedder supplies a wonderful and touching soundtrack! 3. No Country for Old Men-9/10-The Coen Brothers return to form with this brilliant crime story about a man on the run after discovering a bag of drug money...Javier Bardem gives the most chilling performance of the year as a killer stalking our hero(Josh Brolin) across the stark plains of West Texas. 4. 300-9/10-Zack Snyder's adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel about the battle of Thermopylae is stylized filmmaking at its bravest...featuring gorgeous cinematography of ancient carnage! 5. Charlie Wilson’s War-9/10-Tom Hanks and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are both superb in this funny, biting political satire by director Mike Nichols...Hanks plays a nefarious congressman who covertly funds the war in Afghanistan against the Soviets, which leads to the fall of communism. 6. There Will Be Blood-9/10-Daniel Day-Lewis gives a ferocious performance as self-proclaimed oil-man Daniel Plainview in director Paul Thomas Anderson's sprawling and epic masterpiece about a greedy and vile oil prospector...Paul Dano is also great as a young minister whose faith and devotion to the church are shattered by Lewis' presence in his desolate Californian homestead. 7. Zodiac-9/10-David Fincher's crime epic about the infamous Bay Area serial killer is as engrossing as a film can be...great cast features Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Edwards. 8. Juno-9/10-Ellen Page gives a wonderfully funny and vulnerable performance as a 16 year-old girl coping with an unexpected pregnancy...the wonderful cast including Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman highlight Diablo Cody's hilarious and touching script! "I would love to be the cheese to a certain someone's macaroni." 9. American Gangster-9/10-Ridley Scott's crime epic featuring Denzel Washington as the ferociously, charming Harlem drug-lord Frank Lucas and Russell Crowe as the honest-to-good cop hunting him is by the numbers, but its fascinating stuff and its great to see two acting titans chew up the screen on opposite sides of the law. 10. Sicko-8/10-Michael Moore does it again with this unflinching look at what a mess the American Health Care system is as opposed to the rest of the world. 11. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street-8/10-Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are sinisterly evil together in Tim Burton's dark and brooding blood-splattered musical based on the Stephen Sondheim Broadway hit. "How 'bout a shave?" 12. Atonement-8/10-James McAvoy and Keira Knightley are both excellent in this the most romantic all be it tragic movie of the year as two unlikely lovers who are torn apart by war and the treachery of a young girl, who pays for it for the rest of her life. 13. Michael Clayton-8/10-George Clooney, Tilda Swinton and Tom Wilkinson are all terrific in this smart and involving law thriller...pay attention closely or you might lose your way, because its well worth it once the credits roll. 14. Gone Baby Gone-8/10-Ben Affleck's directorial debut is a gritty hometown story of a neighborhood P.I. on the search for a missing girl...with his brother Casey Affleck giving a great performance. The ending had me thinking for days! 15. The Hunting Party-8/10-Richard Gere and Terrence Howard are terrific in this underrated gem about two journalists who venture to Serbia in search of a ruthless war criminal. "Watch out for the landmines!" 16. Once-8/10-A beautiful and touching film about an Irish street performer and an immigrant from the Czech Republic who are brought to life by the wonderful and moving music they write and record together. 17. Across the Universe-8/10-Julie Taymor's ballsy love story set to the backdrop of the revolutionary '60s and the music of the Beatles is movie-making on the edge...go there if you dare! 18. The Bourne Ultimatum-8/10-The third and final chapter of the Jason Bourne story is its best. Exciting and relentless throughout...this is the definitive spy trilogy of modern times! 19. I Am Legend-8/10-Will Smith stands alone in a startlingly desolate New York City struggling to survive and find a cure for a deadly virus that has wiped the Earth clean of humankind. Compelling and fascinating in every way! 20. Grindhouse-8/10-This 3+ hour sleaze-fest of low budget horror, action and comedy was simply a blast to watch from beginning to end...Robert Rodriguez' Planet Terror was pure horror-shock entertainment and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof was racing madness and mayhem at its finest. 21. Transformers-8/10-The mega-toys of the 1980's return in this wildly entertaining movie by Michael Bay...yeah its not exactly Shakespeare but who cares...this was fun and imaginative and you gotta love it! 22. 3:10 to Yuma-8/10-Russell Crowe and Christian Bale are both excellent in this remake of a classic Glenn Ford western about a down-and-out rancher who pledges to bring a ruthless killer to justice no matter what the costs...Ben Foster is brilliantly evil as Crowe's 2nd in command. 23. Knocked Up-8/10-Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl are both funny and engaging in this hilariously raunchy but touching sex-comedy by writer-director Judd Apatow..." 24. Superbad-8/10-"Team Apatow had a brilliant year along with the above mentioned Knocked Up, the music parody Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, and this filthy warm-hearted teen comedy about two friends who try to score liquor and get laid during their last days of high-school." 25. Bridge to Terabithia-8/10-For me this was the most surprising film I saw all year...about two lonely kids, who share a touching and deeply moving friendship through the power of imagination...it took me back to when I was a child and few films have ever done that! 26. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story-8/10-In a year filled with great movie musicals or movies about music it is only fitting that we get a parody about them, featuring John C. Reilly in a funny performance as a country rock legend, who lives through all the "Behind-the-Music" clichés known to Rock N' Roll...hilarious stuff throughout! 27. Eastern Prmoises-8/10-Viggo Mortensen Teams up again with maverick director David Cronenberg in this dark and brooding film about a dirty little secret within the Russian mafia in London. 28. The Lookout-8/10-In this quiet, tense bank-robbery caper Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a young man dealing with the effects of a tragic accident and being forced into a very uncompromising position. 29. National Treasure: Book of Secrets-8/10-Nicolas Cage returns as renowned treasure hunter Benjamin Gates in this fun, entertaining sequel to the 2004 treasure as this time Cage tries to clear his family name…the cast from the first film is back along with newcomers Helen Mirren and Ed Harris…I love these characters and it’s all just entertaining historic fun! 30. Live Free or Die Hard-8/10-Bruce Willis returns after a 12 year absence as tough NY city cop John McClane…this time he teams up with a young computer hacker played by Justin Long to take down Timothy Olyphant’s plan to crumble the U.S. infrastructure. 31. Seraphim Falls-8/10-Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson are both great in this underrated and compelling western about a man seeking revenge after he lost his family during the civil war! 32. Sunshine-8/10 Danny Boyle directs this interesting and thought-provoking sci-fi gem about a mission to restart the sun and save planet earth. 33. Halloween-8/10-Rob Zombie’s faithful remake of the 1978 horror classic is clearly made with a love of the original and the genre…although the ending is standard stuff the first half of the film is great as we see the development of psychopathic killer Michael Myers. 34. The Golden Compass-8/10-Dakota Blue Richards really shines and gives a wonderful performance as a plucky young girl, who ventures to the North Pole to rescue her schoolmates in this fantasy film based on the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. 35. Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix-8/10-although this is the weakest of the Harry Potter franchise, it is still fun to see Harry and his mates face darker and tougher challenges at the school of witchcraft and wizardry. 36. Bee Movie-8/10-Jerry Seinfeld lends his comedic touch to this very warm and colorful film about a bee, which braves away from home into the outside world and finds that all life is connected. The best animated film of the year! 37. Rataouille-8/10-Pixar studios score another winner with this sweet and delicious tale about a rat, which has a taste for gourmet cuisine and a pension for helping out a Parisian kitchen.
