It was NECESSARY to do it. So they thought "Why not do it in a interesting, creative way?". Not exactly. Joe Wright has said he wanted to make an almost literal adaptation of the novel, the tracking shot on the beach was a way to show off the impeccable technical aspect of the production and to convey a sense of dispair that a character can only feel in his thoughts on paper. That may be the story on why it was done, but Wright had a real thought in how it was done.
