So now after all these months I can now say OFFICIALLY that Cloverfield did not live up to the massive hype surrounding it. Of course not for me at least. Don't get me wrong. It was a pretty cool concept and everything. The actors were all credible enough. It's just that after seeing people scrambling to determine clues that probably never really meant anything when the viral campaign was being released I just knew the final product wouldn't be able to live up. I suppose my main problem was the obvious one. The use of cameral. I understand what JJ was going for. He wanted this to come off as realistic as possible. We are actually watching the events as they unfolded. Sure, that's great but after a while it just became bothersome. Towards the end I started getting bored just because of how unsteady everything was from beginning to end. I wasn't entirely sold on the whole love story either. I guess it was kind of interesting to have them going deeper into the city while everyone else in their right mind was trying to get the fuck out of there as soon as possible. I just wish it had been for a different reason. Damn hokey love stories. I guess I can't really fault Abrams for this one but I just wish that by this time we could get some truly convincing CGI for a change. Something that really makes me feel like the monster was TRULY in the city. Usually I hate CGI altogether because I feel it's unnecessary but in a case such as this one I agree that it was put to good use. All in all Cloverfield was pretty fun. It kept me entertained for 90 minutes but I certainly wouldn't call it a groundbreaking work of horror. It has already grossed $40 million for it's opening weekend and I think the budget was only around $20 or so, so it's already a bona fide hit. I just hope Abrams decides to go ahead with another project instead of a sequel. The movie ended pretty abruptly and quite frankly I would just rather not know the fates of the characters... or the monster. Cloverfield - 7/10 Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes. |
