I think the main reason for this was the anticipation of the latest Harry Potter book, since most bookstores were releasing it at midnight. Every newscast had reports from bookstores all over, showing line-ups of kids patiently waiting and waiting (dressed up etc etc)... I suspect that the HP "core audience" will be too busy READING than going to the movies right now.
