I can see the time of year playing a factor. People weren't in the mood for it right now. In the end, I think S3 is nothing more than a scapegoat. Sometimes the studios seem hellbent on counterprogramming and release something like Land of the Dead or 28 Weeks Later at the wrong time. I just don't think the second weekend of Spider-Man 3 (huge drop and all) is the reason for 28 Weeks Later's box office.
