Sure, I guess people expected it to open higher, but, it's an overall great opening. It's pretty similar to what happened to King Kong back in December. Both films are full of visually amazing action sequences, and were advertised enormously on T.V., radio, movie theatres, and even fast food restaurants. But, I guess what kept the box-office numbers low was the fact that some people have already seen the whole Superman vs. Lex Luthor rivalry and the Superman and Lois Lane romance. Just like people had already seen the whole tragedy of King Kong and the romance with Anne Darrow on Skull Island and on top of the Empire State Building. Another weak spot for both films is the long running time. King Kong was well over three ours, while Superman Returns was just UNDER three hours. And, to some audiences, when it comes to long movies, they might as well just wait for the dvd. If it weren't for the rave reviews and the huge fanbase, films like Superman Returns and King Kong would sink even lowe in terms of box-office numbers. |
