If last year’s best films could have easily been attributed to a foreign, namely Mexican, influence (what with Alfonso Cuaron, Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu and Guillermo Del Toro’s opuses), this is the year of the American auteur through and through. I just picked that book up myself, looking forward to reading it. As for 2007, for me the year in movies was as middle of the road as you get. Sure, there were more good films then there were horrible films, but there were also more good films then there were great films. I only really loved one movie ("Once") and only really hated a select few (Chuck and Larry), but the rest was just good, not great. I blame part of it on the storytellers of 2007. A lot of films had plots that just didn't achieve that next level to go from good to great. A lot of stories felt old, predictable, or for those trying so hard not to be obvious, completely out of left field. Endings, which have always been hard, have become problematic (a trend I noticed continuing at Sundance this year), and very often leave a movie just shy of astonishing. Even some of the best films of the year (Atonement, There Will Be Blood) had endings that took the steam straight out of their momentum to the top. Maybe I'm just growing more cynical about movies (I hope not), but 2007 definitely wasn't one of my favorite years. My hopes are high for 2008...hopefully. |
