Forum: groupsrv | | Mr. Soundtrack took over a sliver on the left side of the silent frame, so I don't know what would have cut off the right side of a frame. The video was 1997 and the transfer presumably done at around the same date. The titles introducing the characters all feature a little 'live' inset shot of the character in question on the right-hand side of the screen, which made it unfortunately obvious that the picture had been cropped horizontally (as you could only see half their faces!) [snip] Very often when the 1.33 full-frame silents were/are printed or transferred after the silent era was into the reduced 1.37 Academy aperture (like Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, etc.) The way they got the Academy aperture to fit on the film was to slice some area from the left side of the silent aperture for the sound track, and a little less from the top & bottom. What you describe sounds much more extreme than that, not the least because silents usually were shot with a lot of headroom. Slight confusion here, I think - what I was seeing was a slice off the right-hand edge of the picture, so it was the side of the face that was cut off, not the top of the head. Presumably the other frames were affected as well, but it was only perceptible on the intertitles as these were the only ones with the important area over on the far right-hand side! e.g. ------------------------------- | | | HARRY, | | .....| | . | | THE RINGLEADER . /--| | . **| <---- little inset of Harry | . --| |------------------------------ I was impressed by the technique as I haven't previously seen titles with actual images superimposed (as opposed to drawn artwork), let alone ones with animated clips in one corner. The extract I saw looked like quite a decent film, but the IMDb reviewers seem to have hated it... -- Igenlode Visit the Ivory Tower http://ivory.150m.com/Tower/ Cliffhanger adventure story: http://ivory.150m.com/Tower/Fiction/Pirates/ |
