I have a few burned DVDs in my collection, but I always obtain them through a legal means. My friends and I have a system. If there's a movie I really like that they have or they recently bought, I can ask them to borrow it and burn a copy of it, or they will burn a copy of it for me. The DVD being copied is always bought and the DVD being burned on is bought as well. Usually I'll buy a movie if I love it, but if it's one I want but don't want to dish out $15-20 for I'll just capitalize upon my friends resources. It's like making mix tapes, but with movies. However, I always end up longing for DVD cover art, especially Special Editions/Collector's Editions/etc.--so there always feels like something is missing. Many of the ones I ended up getting burned copies of I bought later when new collections came out (one example is The Evil Dead, once the "Ultimate Edition" came out I bought it). However, if I am completely against piracy. DVDs gained through illegal means shows a lack of support for the hard work filmmaker's put into making that product. Downloading movies is just plain disrespectful and most of the time these bootlegged DVDs are supposed to have crappy quality- so why bother? If it is truly good enough to own, it's good enough to buy.
