I thought the evolution of Sarah was fine, but it was that the movie seemed to be more obsessed with pop culture. It's hard to explain, but having a GNR music video for the Terminator was the start. I don't think it was unnatural - the Terminator name became very popular over the years, the budget was bigger, and so on.
