First off, I didn't remember the movie being so silly compared to the first. No, it's not exactly Dude Where's My Car? but not exactly the first movie either. The tone is drastically different and that was probably a product of the times - first one made during the cold war, the second as it was coming to a close. This may be why the second movie lacks the paranoia of the first. I didn't realize I'd gotten an extended version, but had seen the movie enough to quickly recognize the scenes. The love scene in the asylum was useless, but removing the chip was really great. Teaching the terminator to smile was horrible, but did serve some purpose when we later see the Terminator pop a smile. This is a fun action flick, but really hard to compare with the first one outside it being a Terminator flick. The overall storyarc for all three movies is quite good and I really like that saga, but the second movie is so very different - much less creepiness abound. The third one seems like they hired Abrahams and Zucker to make a Terminator movie. I'm not hating on T2 like a lot of people here are, but am mostly just highly praising the original, which I feel has become unfairly underrated below the sequel. Sure, it didn't look totally right when Arnold removes his eyeball, but it's still a fcuking awesome scene just as even though (as has been pointed out) they use some of the worst direction in allowing us to spot stunt men in the 2nd one, those chase scenes are still really cool. The second one does play more like a sci-fi action movie than the first; the first is more like a horror chase film, in my opinion. I do confess to enjoying the (groundbreaking) special effects in the 2nd one over the first . . . which became dated the minute the sequel came out. And not only is the tone different in the second than the first, but so are the characters. Sarah Connor went from a scared woman, to a freakin' commando who stabs her psychologist in the knee, doesn't flinch when some creep licks her face, and finds it okay to assassinate a guy hoping it changes the future. The Terminator model from the first is now a good guy, and the villain can morph into different shapes and people, not forgetting he can form blades from his hands/arms. And like I said before (before this thread basically went to hell), I think there's more to the sequel's story . . . not just keep Sarah safe from the Terminator. There's keeping John safe, getting Sarah out of the pen, preventing Judgment Day, etc.
