I was all excited since no one had mentioned this yet, and I was going to post on it..you beat me to it! Good thing I read all the way through the thread. I was also going to make the same point re: Spielberg and Lucas' brand of cheery, family-friendly sci-fi having a negative effect on this film. It doesn't help though, that by all accounts, the original cut of this film was an impenetrable mess, replete with a lame voice over by Ford and a tacked-on happy ending. I haven't seen the original cut, as it's basically been excised out of existence (does it even exist on DVD? I heard it was only available for a time on laser disc). So in effect, it's one of the rare films that has gotten reconsideration, as well as multiple re-cuts, to help it's cause.
