I never said Toy Story wasn't a work of art.. nor did I say videogames weren't either.
Bioshock is trying to be photoreal. Atleast there is nothing in it that told me otherwise. Had the technology been available for it then I'm certain it would have looked as real as a mid to high budget sci-fi movie would have looked. But it doesn't look that real.
It doesn't look photoreal and therefore I said it's a downgrade. Most videogames are.
That doesn't mean that the art direction of Bioshock isn't cool, because I did think it was good. With videogames you are creating a world that has very big limitations. With today's VFX, creating a world for a film is very limitless. Why would you want to start from such a limited place? Of course sometimes you are going to come from a game that's used it's limitations so well that it is still worth doing, as in maybe your example of Bioshock, but most of the time I don't see the point.. This often goes for story and visuals when you are coming from a starting point of a videogame.. Please keep in mind too that your arguement is based on what many called the game of the year for it's year, and one of the better stylized visual looks and better storylines to come out probably this decade, IMO. I'm not saying don't use it to compare to, just don't forget that it is in the very, very upper end of games. Very few games come even close to it.
